Crowley was asked about his title in court when he testified in a 1934 lawsuit. He was asked,

"Did you take to yourself the designation of the Beast 666?"
"Yes."
"Do You call yourself the 'Master Therion?"
"Yes."
"What does Therion mean?"
"Great wild beast."
"Do these titles convey a fair impression of your practice & outlook on life?"
"It depends on what they mean."
"The Great Wild Beast and the Beast 666 are out of the Apocalypse?"
"It only means sunlight; 666 is the number of the Sun. You can call me LITTLE SUNSHINE."

'Over coffee (and a coffee urn that moves by itself), the parapsychologists explain to the Freelings the difference between a poltergeist and a haunting. They determine that indeed, it is a poltergeist they are experiencing.
It turns out that the spirits have left this life but have not gone into the "Light." They are stuck in between dimensions, watching their loved ones grow up, but feeling alone. Carol Anne—born in the house and only 5 years old—gives off her own life force that is as bright as the Light. It distracts and confuses the spirits, who think Carol Anne is their salvation. Hence, they take her. (A different explanation was given in the second film).
What is also in the other dimension is a malevolent spirit, what the parapsychologists call "The Beast". It likes that the spirits are confused and lost, and uses Carol Anne as a distraction so they cannot move on into the Light. After witnessing a paranormal episode where they hear Carol Anne talking to Diane through the TV, see spirits, and hear the pounding footsteps of the spirit, the parapsychologists leave, admitting they need more help. When they return, they bring a spiritual medium, Tangina Barrons (Zelda Rubinstein), who informs Diane that her daughter is "alive and in this house." She also explains the malevolent spirit in the house to Diane, saying "it lies to her and tells her things only a child can understand. To her, it simply is another child. To us, it is the BEAST."
'Existence is a flame which constantly melts and recasts our theories. Existential thinking offers no security, no home for the homeless. It addresses no one except you and me. It finds its validation when, across the gulf of our idioms and styles, our mistakes, errings and perversities, we find in the other's communication an experience of relationship established, lost, destroyed, or regained. We hope to share the experience of a relationship, but the only honest beginning, or even end, may be to Share the experience of its absence.' -R.D. Laing

"Vestal" refers to a vestal virgin, a virgin priestess of Vesta, a Roman goddess. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vestal_Virgin

She said, "There is no reason And the truth is plain to see."
But I wandered through my playing cards
And they would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open wide
They might have just as well been closed

The girl w/ the dark hair was coming toward him across the field. W/ what seemed a single movement she tore off her clothes & flung them disdainfully aside. Her body was white & smooth, but it aroused no desire in him; indeed, he barely looked @ it. What overwhelmed him in that instant was admiration for the gesture w/ which she had thrown her clothes aside. W/ its grace & carelessness it seemed to annihilate a whole culture, a whole system of thought , as though Big Brother & the Party & the Thought Police could all be swept away into nothingness by a single splendid movement of the arm. That too was a gesture belonging to the ancient time. Winston woke up w/ the word "Shakespeare" on his lips.' -George Orwell 1984

Court de Gebelin proposed that tarot means 'Royal Road', being composed of the Egyptian words tar, 'way' or 'road' and ro/ros, 'king' or 'royal'. This is interesting given that the Parma Taratirion, the work from which arose the Fourth Age traditions described in the Tresco MS, was first written for Eldarion, High King of the Reunited Kingdom. Furthermore, one likely derivation from Taratir is tar-, once used in Middle-earth as a Royal name prefix.

The actual meaning of Taratir is nowhere given explicitly in the Tresco MS except that it is glossed Sighð throughout - Old English Boc þaera Hehsighðana translating Parma Taratirion as the title of the prime text.

Bennett's translation from OE Sighð to modern 'Vision' seems secure enough, at least to this poor scholar who must rely upon more learned advice. I am informed that Boc þaera Sighðana was used in Old English for the biblical Book of Revelations...

the images again. And sort them again. This

possibly finite, card game. Image combinations,
permutations, comprise the world game.

'Laum states that the value ratio of gold to silver remained stable throughout classical antiquity and into the Middle Ages and even modern times at 1:13 1/2. It is obvious that such a stability in the ratio cannot be explained in terms of rational supply and demand. The explanation, says Laum, lies in the astrological ratio of the cycles of their divine counterparts, the Sun and Moon.' -Norman O Brown, Life Against Death...

"Here lies the knot," says Vaughan, "and who is he that will untie it?"

"This dream material is not simple raw material. The stuff is always shaped, imaged, and like alchemy's prime material, always has a specific name. To call this stuff "the chaotic id" or "the collective unconscious" betrays it's true face. Chaos, like the id and the unconscious, is an abstraction, a concept about the material, not the material itself, which may appear as an ocean, an abyss, a mudslide, a carnival, a bit of jelly, a madhouse-but always, always as a precise image." -James Hillman

...Heraclitus observed as much in a similar context: "The Lord whose is the oracle in Delphi neither speaks out nor conceals, but gives a sign." "The saying seems to be an image (metaphor)," says Marcovich in his comment, "it's implication might be the following: 'as Apollo neither speaks out all nor conceals all, but shows forth a part of the truth, so also Logos inside the things is neither inaccesible to human knowledge nor self-evident, but requires an intellectual effort from men,' i.e., insight or faculty to interpret correctly the signs emitted by Logos..." -James Hillman

The letter gaml: "throwing stick" became: gimel (ג)"camel":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenician_alphabet ...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimel... 'Phoenician had long-term effects on the social structures of the civilizations which came in contact with it. As mentioned above, the script was the first widespread phonetic script. Its simplicity not only allowed it to be used in multiple languages, but it also allowed the common population to learn how to write. This upset the long-standing status of writing systems only being learnt and employed by members of the royal and religious groups of society, who used writing as an instrument of power to control the access of information by the larger population. The appearance of Phoenician disintegrated many of these class divisions, although many Middle Eastern kingdoms would continue to use cuneiform for legal and liturgical matters well into the common era.'

The Overlook

Ullman: Construction started in 1907. It was finished in 1909. The site is supposed to be located on an Indian burial ground and I believe they actually had to repel a few Indian attacks as they were building it...
Wendy: Are all these Indian designs authentic?
Ullman: Yeah I believe, the basics. Mainly on Navajo and, uh, Apache motifs...

While July 4th may be known in America as Independence Day, it is also celebrated across the Atlantic as Alice In Wonderland Day. According to C. M. Rubin, in an article from the Huffington Post (What Do July 4th and Alice in Wonderland Have in Common?), July 4th is celebrated as “the day that commemorates Lewis Carroll’s first telling of the famous children’s story to his young inspiration, Alice Liddell. It is the day on which Carroll sent his child friend Alice down a rabbit hole in his far-fetched tale, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. During the course of her journey, Alice finds the courage to overcome the strange, often intimidating characters she meets in the kingdom of Wonderland, realizing they are just ridiculous obstacles in her path. ” On July 4, 1862, Charles went on a picnic with some friends up the Isis River. One of the children on the picnic was a ten year old girl named Alice. Alice begged Charles to tell her one of his stories. So he began telling her about young girl named Alice and her adventures underground.

  1. Awesome post. Wild stuff connecting with a lot of recent syncs I have been experiencing.

I had never (perhaps naively) thought of clockwork Orange as referring to the Sun or solar clock. Earlier tonight I was day dreaming of Solar flares causing civil unrest on a mass scale as we approach solar maximum. Recent solar activity seems to parallel riots in the UK and protest here in SF. While in portland Steve Willner also mentioned an inverse relationship between solar activity and the economy. Recent solar activity also paralleled the credit downgrading. When I came to, I looked at the name of the song playing, my itunes was on shuffle, the title was Corona Radiata. Solar cycles measure Solar Irradiation. Then coming across this post later is very interesting.

On the way back from the Sync Book Meetup we went to Mt Rainer which has an Inn that looks just like the Shining Hotel. (Also at the SYnc meet up we joked that "All work and no Sync makes Jack a Dull boy) On our way out we stop at a Gem shop and a couple is driving a yellow Bug asked if we wanted to trade cars. Maybe we should have. . .

  3. There are things that you know that you know; there are things that you know that you dont know; there are things that you think you know that you dont know and there are also things that you dont know that you dont know. Did you know that?
it all adds up; but where does it lead? making the quantum leap from words/numbers/imagery/focus to direct experience without interference is monumental: one for all and all for one
